To build and maintain a healthy immune system, we must start with food. Unfortunately, most of the food marketed to us in the U.S. is designed to appeal to our taste buds alone, emphasizing refined sugars, salt and unhealthy  fats instead of the fresh natural foods that our bodies know how to digest and utilize in order to maintain healthy cells, blood, tissues and organs.

I suggest that you try ignoring the seductive advertising campaigns, and instead seek out unadulterated foods, avoiding overly processed and refined products that offer very little nutritional value. If you read the tiny print on the labels of these imitation foods, you will find a list of lab chemicals, including high fructose corn syrup, that are not found in Nature and are known to be harmful to us.  Food manufacturers use high-fructose corn syrup in condiments such as ketchup and in many beverages because it is cheap, but it is a time bomb for Type 2 Diabetes, obesity and other health problems.

There is good news! Healthier versions of some store-bought processed foods are becoming more widely available. I purchase Primal Kitchen Unsweetened Ketchup and their Classic Unsweetened BBQ Sauce when I do not have time to make my own, and they are fine. Tomatoes are naturally sweet, they are technically a fruit!

It is possible to nourish your body to optimal health by choosing wisely the food you ingest every day. Deprivation is harmful; don't do it. Instead, celebrate Life every day by consuming only the most nutritious, delicious food that you can find.

  Schedule Changes! October 8, 2017

As I mentioned in a recent newsletter, my morning Tuesday and Thursday schedule will change soon due to the addition of a new venue, Anytime Fitness at the corner of Burnt Store Road and U.S. 41, next to the new Publix.  This has presented me with a wonderful opportunity to have more classes close to home, but it is also bittersweet as I will be giving up my Tuesday 10am Yoga class at Franz Ross, my Thursday 9am TRX class at Franz Ross, and my Thursday 10:45 Yoga class at Bayfront. I am still keeping my Monday classes at Bayfront, both Yoga and Meditation, so I am hoping to see many of my dedicated students then.

Marcelle Kouhana will be assuming the Yoga classes that I am giving up.  She and I have known each other for several years and she is familiar with my teaching style, so I feel that she should be a good fit for these classes. All change is difficult, and this decision has brought me much trepidation, but it seems to be the right course of action for me to take at this time, and I hope that I can continue to count on the support of my friends at the YMCA.

  23andMe April 12, 2017

Today I feel that I am embarking on a very new type of adventure, into the past, as technology has recently provided us with amazing tools to learn more about our ancestry.  My husband Pedro and I purchased our DNA/Ancestry and Health kits online from 23andMe a few days ago, last night we spit into vials and sealed them, and he is now on his way to the post office to send them off to be processed.  Assuming all goes well, we both should receive info on our respective ancestries dating back 500 years, and detailed reports on specific markers on our chromosomes and what they could indicate.  Healthwise, we really don't know what to expect, as very little health info from previous generations has been passed down in either family, but we suspect that our inherited genes could tell interesting stories that could confirm our intuitions.  Additional information can only help us to tweak our lifestyles in order to optimize wellness.  As I learn more about my ancestors, I will learn more about myself.  The 23andMe box says it well, "Welcome To You".

I'll keep you posted!

We returned last week from a delightful vacation in Iceland, eager to start our summer schedule, when Tropical Storm Colin intervened.  All Charlotte County YMCA locations are closed today even though the storm is due to pass comfortably north of us, we are still getting a lot of rain with the possibility of some flooding and perhaps even some spin-off tornadic activity.  It's always wise to be prepared for the worst, and an excellent day to stay off the roads as much as possible.

At this time on a Monday I am normally setting up for my 10:20 Yoga w/Props class at the Bayfront YMCA, followed by a half-hour Meditation class from 11:30 until noon.  Today I will do my yoga and meditation alone if Pedro doesn't have time to join me.  This afternoon was to be the launch of my Summer TRX class from 4:15 to 5:15pm at the Franz Ross YMCA; we will now need to launch next Monday and schedule a make-up day that is convenient for all of the participants.  I am hoping that the rest of the week will be unaffected; I am looking forward to the launch of my new CCPS Summer Yoga class at Meadow Park Elementary this Wednesday from 4:15 to 5:15pm.

I am just thankful that we are not going to be directly affected by this storm, and I hope that those who find themselves in its path are well prepared.  The major lessons I learned from Hurricane Charlie are that weather science is inprecise, storms are very unpredictable, and you never know when it could be your turn to experience violent weather.  I also learned how to cope with the storm and its aftermath, and gained confidence in my ability to deal with difficult conditions.  While I would not wish this experience upon anyone, I acknowledge and appreciate the strength that I gained from it.

On May 18th, my husband Pedro and I will be leaving for a vacation trip to Iceland!  This is our second visit there, as we went there six years ago to see our friends in Reykjavik (former residents of Punta Gorda!) and also explored the area of the Western Fiords, which proved too inhospitable for the Vikings and Is now an incredible bird and wildlife sanctuary.

On this visit we plan to travel to the Eastern side of the island, home to incredible waterfalls, glaciers and volcanoes (including the one that erupted shortly before our last trip there).  Since this area is fairly remote, I won't be able to keep up with the weekly newsletter so the one I am sending on May 15th will cover my absence until May 29th.  We plan to do some hiking and whale-watching and take many pictures.  It's chilly there even in May, average highs in the 40's and  lows in the low 30's, perfect for hiking.  Iceland is breathtakingly beautiful and the people are friendly, so if you enjoy adventure travel we highly recommend that you consider a visit there.

Iceland has one of the healthiest cuisines we have encountered on our travels.  It is based upon only the freshest seafood, meats and produce, and the restaurants pride themselves on the healthfulness and traditional preparation of their menus.  We saw neither processed food nor junk food on our last visit; I can only hope that this trend continues.  Every restaurant we visited fit the description of what we would call "a health food restaurant".  Even the airport calls itself "The World's Healthiest Airport", and well deserves the title, presenting an amazing variety of wholesome fresh foods!

I began my career as a yoga instructor in a small, friendly yoga studio where we welcomed any student wishing to share our love of this ancient wellness system.  Since then I have been fortunate to teach in many different settings and venues, but they all have limited access to only their members, residents, or employees.

So I am changing my schedule slightly to try a new venue, Isles Fitness in Punta Gorda Isles, open to anyone.  I am starting with one class, TRX/Yoga, and I hope to add more classes there as demand increases, including a full-hour yoga class and a full-hour TRX.  These are the practices that I feel have contributed the most to improving my personal wellness and fitness levels, and I am honored to be able to help others achieve improvements in their own quality of life.

  YMCA Classes January 8, 2016

I feel so very fortunate to be able to share my love of yoga with so many appreciative students.  It is truly a privilege to teach my Yoga with Props and Meditation classes on Mondays at the beautiful Bayfront YMCA Center in Punta Gorda where we are treated to the lovely view of the bay, the sailboats, the bird serenades and the occasional passing dolphin.

On Tuesdays I teach a TRX/Yoga class at the Franz Ross YMCA in Port Charlotte, followed by a full-hour Yoga with Props class.  TRX is body-weight strengthening exercise using straps, and is very compatible with yoga.  In this small-group class we do a half-hour TRX session to build strength and stamina, followed by a half-hour yoga session to stretch and lengthen the muscles worked.

On Thursdays I teach a full-hour TRX class at the Franz Ross YMCA, followed by a full-hour Yoga with Props class at the Bayfront YMCA Center in Punta Gorda.  This is a sublime combination, which led me to create the Tuesday TRX/Yoga class.  The description really does not do it justice; it needs to be experienced.

My Yoga with Props classes are open to all YMCA members, just arrive a few minutes early to set up.  There is a charge for the TRX/Yoga and TRX classes, please check with the welcome desk at Franz Ross for current fees and to reserve a spot as space is limited.  I regret that I do not currently have a venue where I could offer private or small-group yoga or TRX classes to non-YMCA members, but I look forward to being able to do so in the not-too-distant future.
